We were asked to extend this beautiful vernacular flint cottage and felt we must respond with an appropriate design to complement the existing. However, its exposed location required us to specify the best, hi-tech building products to keep the weather out! The result is a structure which combines traditional building methods (handmade bricks & tiles in lime mortar) with high-performance timber windows and German sliding screens.

Given its remote location our client is keen to develop the house to be as self-sufficient as possible. To this end the house employs an efficient multi-fuel burning stove and rainwater harvesting with a view to installing a wind turbine and fuel cell technology for power supply in future.
