The brief requires this farm worker's cottage to be enlarged into a comfortable family home. Given the sensitivity of its location in a conservation area, the local authority restricts the treatment of the proposed fenestration and massing.
However, to create large expanses of glazing to admit natural daylight and maximise the views across the open countryside to the rear of the building, a more radical design is proposed. A large 2-storey corner window was introduced and contrasted with the mass of a large chimney-stack as a focal element; the client specifically requesting a large, open fire and hearth. A low-pitch zinc roof enables the ground floor to be extended to create a large kitchen/family room without interfering with the bedroom windows over.
