Masterplanning

In our wide experience, many schools have developed haphazardly, responding to a short term need which has often been constrained by financial planning. Increasingly we are finding that we are asked by Independent Schools to help them become proactive in their long-term development planning rather than reactionary.

We have also found an increasing understanding within the leadership of Independent Schools to assess their existing campus assets and determine long term goals where expansion and improvement is required. Our expert understanding of the whole school environment (physical, political, financial) has meant that we have been able to guide our clients through individually tailored short, medium and long term master-planning exercises which goes on to give structure to their financial, marketing and business planning.

Our unique methodology

Existing Condition Analysis

Our first contact with you will be simply to walk around the site and listen to your assessment of the challenges facing the school. We then gather the base information; surveys, preliminary brief and accommodation schedule allowing us to develop a solid information base from which to move ahead accurately and efficiently.

Brief Formulation

Having completed a thorough analysis of the school's requirement, we help you to formulate the genesis of a brief. We will consider your requirement against a first cost plan and consult with stakeholders to understand departmental needs. We may then begin to draw together a programme of delivery.

Site Constraint Analysis

In parallel with your brief we will review the physical, environmental and planning policy constraints across the school. These constraints will inform the first sketch proposals to ensure we design proposals which stand the best chance of success and avoid exploring nonviable solutions wasting both time and fees.

Draft Proposals

We now give shape to our first thoughts by holding a series of face-to-face sketch design meetings with you. The sketch process is inclusive and a very rapid way of exploring a variety of ideas. By sitting down and sketching together with you we can quickly eliminate certain avenues and arrive at proposals which address the site and brief most effectively.

Design Evolution

Our design process is iterative. By sketching our ideas on paper directly with you, we then go away and hone these in the studio into a clear graphic format. We then present these thoughts to you and listen carefully to the feedback. It is this feedback loop that is critical to a successful master-planning process.

Masterplan

The end result of this process is the master-plan itself. Whilst it may be lodged with the Local Authority to give shape and visibility to the school's development, it should always be seen as a live document and reviewed regularly. Things do of course change and the master-plan should be robust yet flexible as possible to adapt effectively.
