Headington Preparatory School

Morse Webb Architects recently completed work on a high profile building extension project for Headington Preparatory School which saw the demolition of the old multi-purpose hall to make way for a new modern & efficient design.

The original brief outlined the need to take the school and it’s facilities forward ahead of the school’s landmark Centenary in 2015, whilst remaining sympathetic to the aesthetics of the original listed school building.

Externally, the extension houses a new bay frontage at the Western side which replicates the finely crafted stone and brickwork bays of the original period building.

A light & spacious new Atrium, constructed of minimal structural glass and zinc, provides a curved entrance lobby to the new building, incorporating a gallery over, which connects the old and new elements of the school building, providing an impressive yet elegant focal point.

Demolition of the old extension allowed us to go back to the drawing board and create an entirely new floor-plan which focused on maximising the space available, and to create the optimal learning environment for the students. As part of this, we employed sustainable technologies from industry leader Monodraft, who installed natural ventilation turrets as an alternative to air conditioning. The acoustic environment was provided by Arup Acoustics and specifically tailored to minimise noise stress, thus providing an improved classroom environment for students.

Internally, the new building comprises of the following enhancing teaching & performance facilities:

• A new gym.
• A separate performance space.
• Specialist art and design technology facilities.
• Improved music facilities.
• New dining rooms and kitchens.
• Additional library quiet room.
• New cloakroom areas.

The space for the Learning Support Department was also improved and increased in size to improve the provision of this department and further meet the specific needs of the pupils.

The careful programming of construction & project management allowed the new extension & refurbishment to be completed with minimal disruption to the everyday running of the school, and saw the project delivered cost-effectively and on time.
