Wycombe Abbey School – Music Building

The brief was to upgrade the existing music facility to provide a studio for recording performances in the Music Building Recital Hall. In addition, we were to create a utility space to serve the LAC to deal with laundry, costume and stage sets associated with performances.

The extension represented approx 2% of the existing footprint and was designed to match the single storey section of the building in all respects. The extension reflects and mirrors the existing single storey return on the other side of the Recital Hall.

The extension backs on to the existing Music Building. Two elevations are exposed. The natural slate roof is continued over the new extension and the walls are built in facing bricks with contrast banding courses to exactly match the existing. Velux windows have been introduced in the roof, and sized to match those that give light in the existing adjacent stores.

The new music building overlooks the lake to take advantage of the views set back from generous overhangs to reduce overheating due to solar gain. The Recital Hall, which needs no outlook to ensure a stable acoustic environment, is located on the other side of the building. The heavy mass of the Hall has been used as an acoustic buffer to protect the rooms with a view from the noise generated in the adjacent town centre.
