Designed by Morse Webb Architects, this educational project at St Michael’s School in Burghclere delivered a standalone, 250-seat Catholic church designed to support both the school’s pupils and the local parish community. Replacing a former overcrowded chapel inside the school buildings, the new facility provides a dedicated space tailored to daily liturgical services and major ceremonial events. Inspired by 4th and 5th-century Italian basilicas, the architectural design harmonises classic basilica forms with local Hampshire vernacular using red brick masonry, reconstituted stone accents, and a standing-seam zinc roof. The interior includes a spacious nave with clear sightlines to the chancel, side chapels, sacristies, and a formal narthex entrance lobby, incorporating step-free Part M accessibility throughout. Comprehensive site works completed the development, introducing a landscaped forecourt, a sub-servient terracotta-rendered toilet block, sheltered cycle storage, and a new 32-space car park with clear pedestrian linkages.
