A new development of staff housing for Winchester College, including 2 no converted 1 bedroom units, 1 no new build 1-bedroom studio, 1 no new build 2-bedroom unit and 2 no new build 3-bedroom units (2 storey).

Key issues when developing the site were:

- Provide high quality development in keeping with the Conservation Area.
- Enhance the existing landscape and ecology.
- Accommodate flood impact issues.
- Minimise impact on highways / car parking on the site and surrounding roads.
- Minimise impact on the Itchen Navigation.

The development was formed around a courtyard arrangement, orientating the principle elevations looking into site. This arrangement is common place in rural developments, providing security and enclosure. The new buildings complete the built form enclosure and therefore are located towards the south.

The new buildings are a contemporary design though use traditional materials in reference to the local context. The palette is limited to red facing brick, clay tiles, timber windows, coloured render and timber weatherboarding. All materials, where possible, are locally sourced to reduce the overall carbon footprint but also to create strong physical ties to its locale.

Planning permission for the scheme achieved by Architecture PLB.
