Gayhurst School is located within the South Buckinghamshire Green Belt, in a predominantly residential setting. The school commissioned Morse Webb to deliver a new Sports Hall with associated changing facilities, a Staff Room, and a purpose-built Performing Arts Auditorium with a dedicated dance studio.
The Green Belt location created a constrained site where available space was limited. Combined with the sensitivity of the surrounding residential context, this influenced the scale, appearance, and arrangement of the new buildings.
The Performing Arts Auditorium forms the focal point of the development, drawing inspiration from the scale and character of neighbouring residential properties. Its design echoes traditional hipped clay-tile roofs, creating a sympathetic relationship with the local built environment. In contrast, the contemporary link structures, staff room, and sports hall are positioned deeper within the site, reducing their visual impact on the surrounding neighbourhood.
The auditorium was designed to provide first-class facilities capable of supporting a diverse range of performances, from intimate spoken-word productions and monologues to acoustically demanding musical performances. Close collaboration with school staff throughout the design process ensured that the completed facilities successfully met the school's aspirations and operational requirements.
