Following an increase in students, Headington School required new facilities to expand the range of sporting and indoor activities that they are able to provide. A new extension was proposed to the current sports hall, retaining the existing building and it's functions, while also making new spaces available. The new extension provides a new fitness suite, dance studio, cycling space, and rowing room, along with all necessary facilities for changing and storage.
The main Headington School site is located inside Oxford’s St Clements and Iffley Road Conservation Area, requiring the new building design to appropriately address sensitive constraints around scale, mass and materiality. Through mimicking the existing masonry buildings, the new proposal is well placed within the context of the school and the wider Conservation Area. The orientation of the building takes full advantage of external views across the playing fields, encourages the gain of natural light and visually links the internal and external activity spaces together.
