The Wellbeing Centre project at King Edward VI School involved the adaption of a block of classrooms and offices into a series of spaces dedicated to the support and wellbeing of the students. The previously dimly lit and dated classrooms were transformed into a more open plan and free flowing space, defying the constraining grid layout of the classrooms.
A combination of soft furnishings, high quality internal lighting, and warm timber cladding creates a welcoming and calming space for the students to use. Coupled with an increased volume of natural light, these qualities promote the idea of wellbeing and ensures the comfort of all users. Enclosed booths of seating and individual breakout rooms promote a degree of privacy, allowing for private discussion in an otherwise open semi-public space.
One of the main constraints of the project was undergoing construction work without disturbing the neighbouring classrooms and offices. To do so, all site work was condensed through careful planning into two months during the summer, when students were not on site.
